Queen Elizabeth’s School is a boys’ grammar school in Barnet. Founded in 1573, it’s consistently one of the highest-performing schools in the UK across both state and independent sectors. It was named the Sunday Times State School of the Year in 2022.

  1. Maths and English both multiple choice.
  2. Both papers will be sat in one session.

The 11 plus exam for Queen Elizabeth’s School takes place on the 20th and 21st September 2023. Boys will be invited to take the test on one of the two days. Like the other Barnet grammar schools’ exams, it is provided by GL Assessment.

Quantum Training

Here are our top tips on how to best prepare your child for The Henrietta Barnett School 11 plus.

We Cover all the content
The 11 plus assesses a large breadth and depth of learning objectives across the Key Stage 2 national curriculum and beyond.

We recommend that you enroll your child in year 4 . We believe in using a ‘little and often’ approach will give them time to build the skills and knowledge they need. When preparing, avoid falling into the trap of over-focusing on either the topics your child enjoys or the topics they find hardest.

At Quantum, your child will do 4-hour sessions over a week.

Mock Exam
We run a series of CSSE Mock Exams from May. These tests will offer the child a platform to experience examination conditions. The results give the teachers and parents a better understanding of strengths and weaknesses to ensure they are well prepared for the main exams.

The CSSE (Consortium of Selective Schools in Essex) 11+ examination consists of 2 papers. Both papers take 1 hour and they are of equal weighting in terms of marks. Both papers are based upon Key Stage 2 of the National Curriculum.

Paper 1

The English paper covers the following areas:

  • Comprehension, grammar and vocabulary questions
  • 2 pieces of creative writing
  • Applied reasoning (literacy and verbal)

Paper 2

  • The maths paper covers applied reasoning

Quantum CSSE Training

We run classes to prepare our students for the CSSE Assessment. Our 3-hour maths and English sessions cover the key topics that will appear for the test.

We use a variety of well-developed resources to ensure that our children get the school of their choice. Not only do we pride in our exceptional success rate but also in the fact that a majority of students achieve an average of 360 cut-off, a 100% in mathematics.

  • Creative Writing

Our Creative Writing session has been popular. Apart from the preparation for exams, it is an excellent skill for later years.

Qualified Private Tuition & Exam Preparation at Home

As students pass from primary school to secondary school, many will need to undergo an interview process that includes an entrance exam. This exam will cover Maths, English, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning in order to formally assess your child’s academic skills. For students at 13 years old, the test will also include Geography, History, and Science.

GL Assessment (Granada Learning) is a test provider that creates eleven plus exams. Their exams are used by most UK grammar schools, and some independent schools, to decide which children will be offered a place.

GL Assessment exams used by grammar schools tend to be paper-based and non-adaptive. This means that the difficulty does not adjust depending on the answers your child gives.

GL papers assess four subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Non-verbal reasoning

Not all schools and regions choose to use all four subjects and they can combine any of the papers with their own test content.

The test covers all Key Stage 2 national curriculum objectives in English and maths. This includes Year 6 objectives that children have not yet encountered at school, as they sit the 11 plus at the very start of Year 6.

The ideal time to start preparing for the 11 plus is in the summer term of Year 4 or early autumn term of Year 5. Starting early and practising often in bitesize chunks will minimise stress and pressure.

Build curriculum knowledge

When preparing for an exam it can be tempting to jump straight into using past papers. However, this is not an effective way to learn, and can cause children to feel demotivated. Learners should build a secure understanding of the 11 plus content before being tested under exam conditions.

Build exam technique

Once your child is confident with the 11 plus curriculum, begin to introduce practice tests to help them get used to GL question formats and timings. They will develop essential time management skills, and become familiar with what to expect on exam day.

Celebrate progress

To keep motivation high, be sure to celebrate each milestone in your child’s revision, no matter how minor! Small rewards and plenty of breaks help young learners to stay engaged.

Support wellbeing

Preparing for exams can feel overwhelming for young people. Here’s how to prepare mentally and emotionally, and how to help your child manage test anxiety should it arise.
